How to Build Muscle - Shouldering the Load

To me shoulders or more to the point-broad well developed shoulders-make you stand out wherever you go.
Because when you think about it-no matter what you are wearing, people can tell if you have broad shoulders or not.
GO OVERHEAD
Back in the fifties and sixties the overhead press WAS the upper body of choice for lifters looking to get big and strong.
Why?
Simple.
When worked hard, the overhead press works all three heads of shoulders-and it also works the middle back as well.
As an added bonus it strengths the muscles that make up the rotator cuff-a pretty good thing if you ask me because if you talk to anyone who has ever hurt a shoulder, they will tell you how hard it is to train with a shoulder injury.
Also, overhead presses work the triceps and give the abs a pretty good workout as well.
OVER AND OUT
The overhead press seems to be making a comeback as of late-and this is a good thing, because for a long time it was forgotten about.
Some people said that it was dangerous for the lower back-which is simply not true.
Truthfully, any exercise that you do incorrectly can cause an injury.
SOME POINTS
If you decide to start doing some overhead pressing (and I hope you do) please do your self a favor and start with an empty bar-or some very small dumbbells and do a couple of warm-up sets.
Then when you are good and warm-start out with a weight you can handle easily for ten reps-but only do five with it.
I am a firm believer when you are just starting out to stick with the tried and true 5x5 (that is five sets of five reps per set for a total of twenty-five reps) program because when you are not quite sure how to do an exercise or you are new to lifting your form has a tendency to break down fast, and this is where most injuries occur.
So stick with five sets of five until you have the form down.
LAST POINT
If you try a barbell, but simply do not like the feel of them, do not be afraid to switch to dumbbells.
Honestly, I prefer the dumbbell version to the barbell one as I feel they are easier on the shoulders.
CONCLUSION
Regardless of how you choose to do them, if you work them hard, overhead presses will help you build a set of shoulders that you cannot hide-no matter what you happen to be doing.
Not bad.
GO FOR IT!
